Starvation is Rampant…Ending Starvation is Possible
Starvation is rampant throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Literally millions of people die each year from starvation. Statistics vary, but some indicate that each year 15 million children die from starvation.
Other statistics cite one death every 3.6 seconds, which does not seem to match that exactly. But whether the real figure is 40,000 deaths per day or only 10,000, it is unacceptable and avoidable.
Every single day, at least 15,000 children die from starvation, and sometimes as high as three or four times that many, while many of us fight obesity, throw away food, and spend money on things that don’t provide the pleasure we had hoped.
Despite the existence of a plethora of organizations whose purpose is to feed the hungry, this miserable death continues to plague a large percentage of the world’s population. But it does not have to be that way.
Every day, while we eat lunch, about 1,000 children die from hunger. Yet for the cost of dinner at any moderately priced restaurant, a hungry child could be fed for one month.
Considered another way, if we gave up one store-bought cup of coffee every other day, a hungry child could be fed for one month.
The Bible has a few things to say about this issue. For example, in the Book of James 1:27 it says this:
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. “
We may or may not be Christian, but if we do not visit widows and orphans in their need, what is our religion about?
We may not be religious at all, but if we do not care for the third-degree holocaust that is taking place, what is our humanity about?
The point is that we can take simple and easy steps to end starvation. You can do it. You can be the one to make the difference.
In coming posts we will look more closely at the ongoing situation, and at simple ways to combat world hunger.
Thank you for caring. God bless you.
